BIKE : A Story of Redemption

Order of events :
  1. On Tuesday, April 17th, at midnight, I turned in a project for my CPSC 410 class. I came back to the dorm and locked up my bike at the rack.
  2. On Wednesday, April 18th, at 10am, I went out to hop on my bike and go to class. It was not there. I panicked. I called the cops and reported it as stolen.
  3. On Thursday, April 19th, at 4:15pm, I found it. In the back of Javier Campos's truck, way out on the other side of campus.

I was walking out to my car in fish lot, with my friend Gottfried. We were going to drive over to the cardoc and drop off my car for repairs, and he'd kindly drive me back to campus. When what to my wandering eye did appear, but MY BIKE!!! I said to myself "I sure am sad about losing my bike. Boo hoo. Hey, what's that over there in that guy's truck?" The rest of the story is documented quite nicely in the pictures below.

I don't know who Javier Campos is, but I hate him. Well, it's okay. I got my revenge. I called the cops and pointed out my driver's license number ENGRAVED ON THE BIKE, boo-yah. I couldn't stop smiling for like an hour. Heck, I still can't. The Germans have a word, Schadenfreude, for what I'm feeling right now towards him.

Just for the record

It just makes things all the cooler that the cop happened to have a digital camera in his patrol car. Thank you Officer Phillips!

*UPDATE* - April 19th, 5:30pm. Officer Phillips says they'll get a search warrant as soon as possible so they can open this guy's truck and give me my front wheel and seat back

*UPDATE* - April 19th, 6:45pm. I looked up Javier's name in the university phonebook, and called his room to mock him. His roommate answered the phone, so I asked him to give J.C. a message for me. "You are SO BUSTED, dude. Ha ha ha ha. I'm so pressing charges. You're not getting away with this. Have a nice day, loser."

*UPDATE* - April 19th, 7:20pm. I no longer hate Javier. I have no respect for him, and I intend to press charges, but I don't hate him. I'm glad, because that was weighing heavily on my soul.

*UPDATE* - April 19th, 7:37pm. Javier just called me..... Creepy. Dang caller ID. He says he's very sorry, and he only stole my bike because someone stole his bike, and he wanted vengeance or something. So, I guess, in the heat of the moment, he bought a pair of boltcutters? Nah.... Well, maybe. Regardless, I'm still pressing charges. I hope he doesn't have my address - it sure would suck if this crazy larcenous freak tried to get revenge.

*UPDATE* - Two weeks later. The police are done processing my front wheel and seat. I can have them back now. Good job guys, I'm glad it takes two weeks to process evidence when somebody pleads guilty and waives his right to a trial.
